This is a Dear Diary moment

Posted: 07 Nov 2021 02:26 AM PST

What is a Dear Diary moment?

Somebody from downstairs rings the bell to the apartment. Apparently it is Paul, Monica's date for tonight. Earlier this day Monica said that this is not going to be a real date. But now the friends know for sure Monica is truly excited.

Ross: He finally asked you out?

Monica: Yes!

Chandler: Ooh, this is a Dear Diary moment.

Why does Chandler call the situation a Dear Diary moment?

Dear Diary is a common way for Americans to start an entry in a personal journal:

  • Dear Diary, today I was sitting in Central Perk when my long forgotten friend stormed in

  • Dear Diary, I think I am having a panic attack each time my mom comes over

  • Dear Diary, I just got asked out by Paul the wine guy!

Keeping a diary is what every nation on a planet seems to do. But what is specific to American culture here is the way of addressing the journal. Did you notice how entries are invited to take a style of a conversation? As if there is a confidant by the name Diary waiting for you on each blank of a page. One way conversation, monologue yes, yet still a conversation.

Can't speak for every country, but in Russia we don't have such widely recognized forms to address a diary or for writing in one. So why this "Dear Diary" form became sort of idiomatic in the American culture?

The United States has a longer, than for example Russia, trend for individualism. But what does it mean if culture of a country is more individual oriented? It means that the culture's man is more clear in who she's as a person. Such human is more likely to know where she is heading in her own life.

The next big task for an individual from individualistic culture is to get better at communicating this info to the world. This is where the Dear Diary form comes on a stage. See there is a big difference in the amount of clarity between free-writing as no one will ever read the flood of your thoughts and conversation style as if you are talking to someone. Even if this friend is made of paper and called Diary.

Raindrops on roses and rabbits and kittens

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:30 AM PDT

Why that song was supposed calm Rachel down?

Rachel has just lost her father's financial support. Monica tries to help Rachel to calm down:

Just breathe, breathe.. that's it. Just try to think of nice calm things...

That's when Phoebe leans over Rachel's ear and starts to sing:

Raindrops on roses and rabbits and kittens, (Rachel and Monica turn to look at her.) bluebells and sleighbells and- something with mittens... La la la la...something and noodles with string.  These are a few...

Why Phoebe thinks it is a good idea to sing about "nice calm things" and not just simnply name them?

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens

Brown paper packages tied up with strings

These are a few of my favorite things…

That is how actually the original lyrics for Phoebe's song goes. The song is called "My Favorite Things". It was written for a character called Maria in the 1959 Broadway musical The Sound of Music. Maria, a mischievous nun turned cheerful nanny, takes care of seven kids. Children adore Maria for her upbeat and warm personality. So when during one of the nights the stormy weather scares the kids, they all run to Maria's bedroom. Maria calms the kids down with the song:

When the dog bites

When the bee stings

When I'm feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don't feel so bad

The idea is simple - when you are upset or worried, try and think of nice things and you'd feel better.

Phoebe is not the only one who can't help but play with the catchy tune of My Favorite Things. In 2019 the artist Ariana Grande based her song 7 Rings on the melody from The Sound of Music. The song topped the charts in fifteen countries. It has been viewed over 1 000 000 000 on YouTube along.

Tuna or egg salad! Decide!

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 09:20 AM PDT

Why is deciding on Tuna or Egg Salad a laughing matter?

The gang is up at Monica's watching an extra dramatic scene on a soap opera. The twist is the show the watch is in Spanish. None of them know that language. So Friends are taking turns guessing what the soap opera's characters are saying to each other. At one point an elder lady in TV shakes her finger and says something angrily. Chandler interprets in dramatic voice:

- Tuna or egg salad! Decide!

The tone of voice suggests Chanler mocks the character. Yet it is still unclear why is the choice between tuna and egg salad the opposite of dramatic? And why are those two even compared? Why not any other salads?

The thing that unites tuna and egg salad is mayonnaise. The ingredients are basically tuna and mayo for tuna salad. And egg and mayo for egg salad. Both are simple and quick to make. Both of them are considered cheap options for your lunch.

But there is one thing that breaks tuna and egg salad in opposite camps. Since around 1960-ies tuna salad has been considered as a diet food. You would eat tuna salad if you care for your health. Where the egg salad is still called "comfort food". That is why even though egg salad is high in cholesterol and calories, Americans still go for it.

Comfort food or diet one? Enjoy the moment or watch your health? That is the question that an American really hears when asked to choose between tuna or egg salad.

Mr Potato Head

Posted: 29 Oct 2021 08:20 AM PDT

Who is Mr Potato Head?

Rachel sits down with the guys at Central Perk and shares why she couldn't help, but run away from her own wedding:

- And then I got really freaked out, and that's when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head..

Who is Mr Potato Head? And why the realization of Barry looking like Mr Potato Head is so much repellent to Rachel, that she feels the need to escape?

Mr Potato Head is a toy. It consists of a plastic potato and plastic parts to attach like eyes, arms, legs. Mr Potato Head took roots in the American culture in conservative prude 50ies.

The toy was not meant to be sexy. According to the ads Mr Potato Head keeps attention of 2 maybe 4 year olds.

Rachel realizes Barry not only looks like Mr Potato Head but also bores her like one. The bride has outgrown her childhood toys, her father's house, her stay at home and do nothing mom's example. Now Rachel is ready for her big girl challenge.

A fun fact - there is actually a Mrs Potato Head on the market too. Guess what people commonly call her? Rachel. Guess that's not what our Rachel wanted to become!
